Frequently Asked Questions

What is PermissionResearch?
PermissionResearch is an online market research community consisting of over 2 million members worldwide, which provides insight into how its members interact with the Internet. In exchange for agreeing to have their Internet behavior monitored, computer users who join PermissionResearch are recognized with a donation of a tree through our Trees for Knowledge program. Periodically, members are also invited to complete online surveys, which gauge their attitudes and interests on a wide variety of topics.

What is the purpose of PermissionResearch?
The goal of PermissionResearch is to develop a better understanding of the trends and patterns affecting the Internet. Just as television uses ratings to determine which programs are the highest rated and most watched, PermissionResearch uses the knowledge of its members’ Internet habits to determine the popularity and importance of various web sites. Internet companies can then use this market research to make informed decisions regarding their online marketing strategies.

What are the eligibility requirements to join PermissionResearch?
To be eligible to join PermissionResearch you must be at least 18 years of age and own or control any computer that you install the PermissionResearch software on. Our software is compatible with most Microsoft Operating systems.

What are the benefits to becoming a PermissionResearch Member?
As a member of PermissionResearch, you have the opportunity to participate in research that is improving the Internet. To recognize your participation in our panel, we will plant a tree through our Trees for Knowledge program. In addition, from time to time, PermissionResearch members may be contacted about special surveys that offer cash or gift cards as a "thank you" for participating.

What is Trees for Knowledge?
Trees for Knowledge is a partnership with the non-profit organization, Trees for the Future, which provides resources to developing countries to improve rural livelihoods through the introduction of environmentally sustainable land management. Through this program, PermissionResearch recognizes our panelists’ participation with tree donations intended to help improve the environment and developing countries’ local economies.

Why should I install the PermissionResearch software? What does it do?
The PermissionResearch software monitors your Internet surfing behavior and online purchase activity. We take that data and combine it with other PermissionResearch members’ data so that we can create an overall (and anonymous!) understanding of Internet usage and e-commerce. Our goal is to understand Internet users browsing and buying habits, but never to influence them or interfere with your Internet activities. For this reason, we do not advertise on our site nor do we release your name or other contact information to third parties for direct marketing purposes.

In addition to collecting data used in research reports, the PermissionResearch software increases your eligibility for surveys. It uses your Internet surfing data to provide you with surveys which are most relevant to the services/products you use.

If you would like to learn more about the type of information the PermissionResearch software collects, how it is collected and how the data is used, please visit our Privacy Policy & ULA.

Will I start getting unwanted SPAM and Pop-ups if I join PermissionResearch?
No. PermissionResearch will not sell your personal information to other companies and will not give any other companies permission to market to you. The only e-mail and pop-ups you will receive once joining PermissionResearch will be invitations for surveys and occasional member services notices. For more information, please read our User License Agreement.

How long do I have to participate?
Participation in PermissionResearch’s community is continuous. Should you ever decide to stop participating, you may do so at any time. Simply follow our uninstall instructions to cancel your participation.

What if I don't want to be a PermissionResearch member anymore?
Although PermissionResearch hates to see members leave, we realize there are good reasons for you ending your PermissionResearch membership. If that is the case, please login to the PermissionResearch Member’s Section and select “Modify my Participation Preferences.” From there you can choose whether you wish to opt-out of surveys, other communications, or all PermissionResearch services.

If you would like to remove the PermissionResearch software from your computer and are using a Windows-based PC, you can simply go to the Start Menu and select Settings then Control Panel (just “Control Panel” for Vista & Windows 7), use the "Add/Remove Programs" function (known as “Programs And Features” on Vista and “Programs” on Windows 7). If you are having problems removing the PermissionResearch software, please email us using our support form . Before you remove the PermissionResearch software, please take a moment to let PermissionResearch know why you have decided to leave the community, so that we can continue to improve our product offerings and services.

How will I receive survey invitations?
PermissionResearch delivers survey invitations via email as well as via a pop up from the research software installed on your computer. Pop-up surveys are currently only delivered to computers running a compatible Windows operating system via an Internet Explorer browser; however, anyone surfing with Internet Explorer, Firefox, or AOL can receive a pop-up survey provided Internet Explorer is installed on your computer.
